Zak Mickens picked up his fifth win of the year,
Alex Lator went 2-for-5, and the Jets grounded the Eagles of Oklahoma Christian 6-4 to clinch the series victory. The Jets took a five-run lead early in the game and never looked back, and
Brandon Roberts came on in relief and tossed 2 2/3 scoreless innings to secure the win.
Andrew Standish got things rolling in the top of the second with a single, and wound up at third base after
Alex Lator grounded out.
Garrett Thomas worked a 3-2 walk, and then
John Branum lined a single into center field to plate the first run of the day. After
Jarrod Flax was plunked to load up the bases,
Tyler Bugner wore the next pitch to score another run and make it 2-0.
Mitchell Beaudreau then bounced a single up the middle, and the Jets had taken a 3-0 lead through an inning and a half.
Zak Mickens sent the Eagles down in order in the bottom of the second, and the Jets added two more in the top of the third to take a comfortable 5-0 lead. Mickens cruised through the first five innings, but the Eagles finally got to him in the bottom of the sixth, to the tune of three runs to cut Newman's lead to 5-3. Mickens held his composure though, and maintained the lead and handed it over to the bullpen in the seventh.
The Eagles tacked on another run in the bottom of the seventh, and threatened to get a rally going before
Brandon Roberts came into the game and slammed the door. Roberts retired the next two batters to get the game into the eighth, but the Jets held a slim 5-4 lead. Both teams went down in order in the eighth, but Newman added another insurance run in the top of the ninth.
Alex Lator laced a one-out double up the left field line to get things going, then
Garrett Thomas singled to center to put runners at the corners for
John Branum. Branum proceeded to drop a perfect safety squeeze up the first base line, which allowed Lator to score and put Newman ahead 6-4. Roberts retired the side 1-2-3 in the bottom of the ninth to clinch the series for the Jets.
Zak Mickens improved to 5-3 on the season with the win, allowing three runs (two earned) and striking out six over six innings.
Brandon Roberts sent down all eight Eagles he faced, striking out one and picking up his first save of the year.
Newman is now 16-16 on the season, and 9-9 in conference. They will look to keep their momentum this week, when they host Southwestern Oklahoma State on Tuesday before traveling to Laredo, Tex. to take on Texas A&M International next weekend. First pitch against SWOSU on Tuesday is scheduled for 3 p.m. at McCarthy Field.
