Late Rally Falls Short As Bulldogs Defeat Jets 5-4

Box Score WICHITA – The Jets came out on the wrong side of a back-and-forth battle against Southwestern Oklahoma State, exchanging the lead four times before SWOSU eventually took a 5-2 lead and held on to win 5-4.  Andrew Standish went 3-for-4 with two doubles and Mitchell Beaudreau had three RBIs in the loss.

Newman drew first blood in the game, with Andrew Standish leading off the home half of the second with a double and then scoring when Kyle Johnston ripped a ball off the second baseman's glove to put Newman ahead 1-0.  The Bulldogs were equal to the task though, and tied the game up in the top of the third with two free passes and a two-out single. The Jets went down in order in the bottom of the third, and the game was locked up 1-1 through three.  Neither team threatened in the fourth, but the Bulldogs were back at it in the top of the fifth, stringing three hits together to score another run and take a 2-1 lead.  Garrett Thomas led off the bottom of the fifth with a single to right, and got all the way to third when the ball bounced past the right fielder to breathe some life into the offense.  After a hit batter and a walk loaded up the bases, Mitchell Beaudreau flied out to center to score Thomas on the sac fly and knot the game up at 2-2 with four innings to go.

SWOSU was back at it in the top of the sixth, taking advantage of two hit batters and a walk to load up the bases, then using two singles to plate two runs and make the lead 4-2.  The Bulldogs would extend the lead to 5-2 in the top of the seventh, which put the Jets in a tough spot needing three runs with only nine outs to go.  Things started off well for them in the bottom of the seventh though, as Jordan Ollenberger and Jarrod Flax both singled to get things rolling with nobody out.  After Tyler Bugner sacrificed the runners over, Mitchell Beaudreau lined a triple into the gap in right center, scoring both runners and cutting the deficit to 5-4.  Ricky Sanchez lined a ball to center field on the ensuing pitch, but the center fielder came into to snare the ball and then whipped it home to nail Beaudreau trying to tag up and score.

The Jets had another opportunity in the bottom of the eighth, when Andrew Standish led off with a double and moved over to third on a flyout to right, but Newman couldn't cash in and Standish was left standing at third when the inning ended.  Tyler Bugner tried to get a rally started with a two-out walk in the ninth, but the next batter fouled out to right to end the game.

With the loss, the Jets are 16-17 on the season, and 9-9 in conference play.  Excluding teams in the conference who are ineligible for the postseason, the Jets are sitting in third place right now, holding a game lead over UTPB and Arkansas Fort-Smith.  They will look to build on that lead this weekend, when they travel down to Laredo, Tex. to take on Texas A&M International for a conference matchup.  Game one of the Friday doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m., with the third game set for Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.  John Branum will be on the bump for Newman in the opening game as the Jets look to get back to their winning ways.
