Men’s Soccer Gets Second Straight Shutout, Ties Maryville, 0-0

Box Score WICHITA – The Newman men's soccer team played to a 0-0 draw on Sunday (Sept. 7) against Maryville at Wilkins Field. The Jets had their second straight shutout after a 1-0 win over William Jewell on Friday (Sept. 5) and haven't allowed a goal in 200 minutes. NU went to 1-0-1 on the season.
 
It was a slow start in the first half with a total of five shots, none of which on goal. The second half picked up with NU totaling six shots to four from the Saints. The Jets had some opportunities late in the second half with a shot high from Gefte Blanc, and Luca Anelli's shot with less than 2 minutes remaining in regulation was stopped by the MU goalkeeper.
 
Anelli had two more chances in the first overtime. Another opportunity similar to his last change in regulation was stopped by the Saints, and another shot when high. Blanc had the final chance for NU late in the first overtime, but MU's Eddie Starr made the save.
 
Steven Hammersky got the shutout in goal for NU and made four saves, including a critical overtime stop. It's the second shutout of the season for Hammersky.
 
The Jets return to the pitch on Wednesday (Sept. 10) against Sterling College at 7:30 p.m. at Wilkins Field. Live stats will be provided for the match.
