EDMOND, Okla. – The Newman wrestling team opened its 2014-15 MIAA schedule with a 34-8 loss at No. 11-ranked Central Oklahoma on Thursday (Jan. 15) at Hamilton Field House. The Jets dropped to 1-3 and 0-1 in the MIAA.
Freshman
Tyler Mies and
Bobby Bowman, who was wrestling in his first career match at NU, picked up the two victories. In the 149 lb. class, Mies earned his win via a tech fall, 18-3, over Spencer Rutherford. Bowman defeated Marlon Houston by a 9-3 decision in the 197 lb. class.
UCO started the dual with three straight wins to take a 12-0 lead.
Dustin Reed lost by a 4-0 decision to Zac D'Amico in the 125 lb. class. In the 133 lb. class,
Kris Workman fell by a 6-0 decision to UCO's
Dustin Reed. UCO's Will Steltzlen pinned
Travis Rodenbaugh at 1:42 in the 141 lb. class for the 12-0 score.
Mies tech. fall win pulled the Jets to within seven at 12-5.
After the NU win, the Bronchos won the next four weight classes. Jeromy Davenport pinned
Forlanda Parker in the 157 lb. class.
Noel Torres lost by a 9-0 major decision to Chris Watson at 165 lb. Dylan Harmon used a 5-0 decision at 174 lbs. to win over Michael Kubik. In the 184 lb. class, Caleb Hawes won a 9-4 decision over
Dalton Weidl. The score was 28-5 after the 184 lb. class.
Bowman got the decision win in the 197 lb. class for a 28-8 score.
At heavyweights, Kyle Factor won via a pin at 5:35 over
Lex Plummer.
UCO totaled 11 takedowns to five from NU. The Bronchos had four reverses.
The Jets are back on the mat on Saturday (Jan. 17) at the Midwest Duals, hosted by Nebraska-Kearney in Kearney, Neb.
