KEARNEY, Neb. – The Newman wrestling team went 0-3 at the Midwest Duals, hosted by Nebraska-Kearney on Saturday (Jan. 17). The Jets lost to New Mexico Highlands (37-6), Colorado State Pueblo (34-10) and Chadron State (34-9). NU dropped to 1-6 in duals this season.
In the loss to N.M. Highlands, freshman
Tyler Mies won by a close 5-4 decision in the 149 lb. class. Also notching a victory was
Travis Rodenbaugh by a 9-7 decision in the 141 lb. class.
Dustin Reed lost a tough 9-8 decision in the 125 lb. class. In the 157 lb. class,
Forlanda Parker was pinned at 4:35.
Noel Torres suffered a 5-2 decision loss at 165 lb. Michael Kubik fell in a very close 3-2 decision at 174 lb. In the 184 lb. class,
Dalton Weidl was pinned at 1:57, and in the 285 lb. match,
Lex Plummer lost by a 12-2 major decision.
Mies went to 2-0 on the day with a 7-5 decision win over Dillon Karajanis in the dual loss to CSU-Pueblo. Reed defeated Alex Baca by a 3-2 decision in the 125 lb. class. The Jets also got a win from Torres at 165 lb. by a 14-4 major decision.
Rodenbaugh lost by a 13-4 major decision against CSU-Pueblo. Parker fell by a 8-5 decision, and
Juan Ortiz lost a 4-0 decision at 174 lb.
Dalton Weidl lost by fall at 0:31 in the 184 lb class. In the 285 lb. class,
Lex Plummer was pinned at 6:31.
The Jets picked up two wins in the 34-9 dual loss to Chadron State. Reed moved to 2-1 on the day with a 5-2 decision win over Robert Ozuna. Rodenbaugh also went 2-1, getting a pin at 0:52 over Josh Miller in the 141 lb. class.
Mies suffered his first loss of the day with a 7-5 decision to Jacob Anderson. Parker was pinned at 3:18 in the 157 lb. class, and Torres fell by a 6-1 decision in the 165 lb. class. In a fast pace match at 174 lb., Ortiz lost by a 19-11 major decision. Weidl went down at 184 lb. by a 7-2 decision. Plummer lost by a 6-1 decision in the 285 lb. class.
NU returns to MIAA action on Wednesday (Jan. 21) at Fort Hays State. The dual starts at 7 p.m. inside Gross Memorial Coliseum in Hays, Kan.
