HAYS, Kan. – The Newman wrestling team won two of the first four matches, but couldn't keep the momentum going, falling 41-8 at No. 15 Fort Hays State on Wednesday (Jan. 21) at Gross Memorial Coliseum. The Jets dropped to 1-7 and 0-2 in the MIAA.
After a forfeit in the 125 class, NU won two of the next three weight classes. Sophomore
Dustin Reed got a 5-2 decision win over Anthony Calderon in the 133 lb. class for a 6-3 score.
Travis Rodenbaugh lost by a tech fall (7:00) at 141 lb. to Noah Killip to increase the FHSU advantage to 11-3. The Jets pulled to within three points at 11-8 after a 19-2 tech fall win from freshman
Tyler Mies in the 149 lb. class over Matt Ziegler.
FHSU won the final six weight classes for the 41-8 final score. At the 157 lb. class, Bradley Little pinned NU's
Forlanda Parker at 3:15.
Zach Duwe went down by a 9-1 major decision in the 165 lb. class to Kregg Clarke. FHSU's Josh Rodriguez won by a 7-1 decision over
Michael Kubik in the 174 lb. class. The Tigers got back-to-back pins in the 184 and 197 lb classes. John Inman pinned
Dalton Weidl at 2:45 in the 184 lb. class, and Cash Drylie won by fall at 3:39 over NU's
Bobby Bowman in the 197 lb. class.
Lex Plummer lost by a tech fall, 15-0, to Jack Page in the 285 lb. class.
The Jets travel to the Kansas Cup on Sunday (Jan. 25) at Baker University in Baldwin City, Kan. The event starts at 9 a.m.
