WARRENSBURG, Mo. – The Newman wrestling team went 1-2 at the Central Missouri Duals on Sunday (Jan. 4) at the UCM Multipurpose Building. NU defeated Indianapolis, 25-21, and suffered losses to Findlay (38-3) and St. Cloud State (46-3).
 
In the close win over Indianapolis, the Jets got wins by Tyler Mies, Noel Torres, Michael Kubik, Juan Ortiz and Lex Plummer. Mies, a freshman from Andale, won by major decision, 11-0, over JD Water in the 149 lb. class to give NU their first win. Torres, a sophomore from Emporia, pinned Clayton Monebrake at 6:47 for six key points in the 165 lb. class. Kubik, a sophomore from Plano, Texas, won the 174 lb. class by forfeit for a 17-16 score after seven matches. Ortiz, a sophomore from Sylmar, Calif., put NU in front at 19-17 with a 2-1 decision victory over Tyler Scott in the 184 lb. class. After a major decision win by Indianapolis for a 21-19 advantage, Plummer got a win, by forfeit, for a 25-21 win for the Jets.
 
The Jets started their day of duals with a 38-3 loss to Findlay. Dustin Reed won by a 6-0 decision in the 125 lb. class for NU's only win.
 
The Jets took on St. Cloud State in their third dual, falling 46-3. Mies, who finished at 2-1 on the day, defeated No. 8-ranked Josh Howk of St. Cloud State by a 6-4 decision. Mies only loss of the day was a close 4-0 decision to No. 4-ranked Nick Goebel of Findlay.
 
NU starts conference action on Jan. 15 at Central Oklahoma. The dual starts at 7 p.m. in Edmond, Okla.
