WICHITA – The Newman wrestling team won the first match in the dual, but lost in the next nine weight classes to fall, 44-3, to No. 6-ranked Nebraska Kearney on Sunday (Feb. 1) at Fugate Gymnasium. The Jets dropped to 2-8 and 0-3 in the MIAA.
Dustin Reed, a sophomore from Colby, Kan., started the match with an exciting 7-5 decision win over Connor Bolling in the 125 lb. class. With the score tied at 2-2 late in the second period, Reed got a takedown right before the buzzer to 4-2 edge. In the third, Bolling went up with an escape and a takedown for a 5-4 score. After an escape from Reed, he once again got a takedown a few seconds before the final buzzer for the 7-5 win.
The Lopers quickly took a 12-3 lead with two forfeit wins at 133 and 141 lbs.
Tyler Mies, a sophomore from Andale, Kan., lost to No. 7-ranked Destin McCauley. McCauley got a 12-3 major decision win after pulling out to a 9-1 lead in the first period.
Forlanda Parker lost by a 9-2 decision in the 157 lb. class to No. 4-ranked Chase White.
In the 165 lb. class,
Noel Torres went down by a 12-4 major decision to Devin Aguirre.
Michael Kubik lost by an 11-5 decision to Chance Bila in the 174 lb. class.
UNK won the final three matches all by pin.
Dalton Weidl lost by fall to Casey Powell at 0:48 in the 184 lb. class. In the 197 lb. class,
Bobby Bowman fell to No. 1-ranked Romero Cotton at 2:56. UNK's Ivan DeLeon pinned
Lex Plummer in the heavyweight class for the 44-3 final score.
The Jets travel to Lindenwood on Saturday (Feb. 7) for a 2 p.m. dual in St. Charles, Mo.
