Jets Split With Javelinas Friday

Box Score KINGSVILLE, Tex. – The Jets took the front half of their nonconference doubleheader with Texas A&M Kingsville by a score of 7-5 on Friday afternoon, with Andrew Standish leading the charge behind a 3-for-5 effort.  The Javelinas came out on top in the nightcap, edging Newman 9-8 to split the double dip.

Game 1: Newman 7, A&M Kingsville 5
Andrew Standish had three RBIs and Garrett Thomas went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored as the Jets won a hard-fought series opener.

The Jets started off the weekend hot, scoring two runs on three hits in the top of the first. Jarrod Flax led off with a single to left, and Tyler Evans was hit by a pitch to put men at first and second with nobody out.  After a strikeout, Andrew Standish laced a single into right center to plate Flax and move Evans over to third.  Garrett Thomas singled down the right field line two pitches later to score Evans, and the Jets took a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the first.

A&M Kingsville were quick to respond though, stringing a couple of singles together around an RBI groundout to score two runs of their own and knot the score 2-2.  The Jets got things going again in the top of the fifth, loading up the bases with nobody out after two singles and an error.  Alex Lator came up and wasted no time, smacking the first pitch he saw into center field for a double, scoring two to make it 4-2 and putting men at second and third.  Ben Wagner came up two batters later and flied out to deep left, allowing Garrett Thomas to tag up and score from third, putting the Jets ahead 5-2 with two and a half to play in the shortened seven inning game.

The Javelinas got one back in the bottom of the sixth on a solo home run, but the Jets struck right back in the top of the seventh to pad their lead.  Ben Wagner and Jarrod Flax worked back-to-back one-out walks, and a flare single from Tyler Evans loaded the bases with one away. After a fielder's choice, Andrew Standish singled through the left side to plate Evans and Flax, giving the Jets a 7-3 lead going into the final frame.

Those two runs proved to be crucial, as A&M Kingsville loaded the bases with one away thanks to a double and a pair of free passes.  A weak single through the right side would score two, but Joe Cannady slammed the door for the Jets, getting a strikeout and an infield pop out to seal the 7-5 win.

Lucas Shauer picked up his first win as a Jet, working into the seventh inning and striking out three before Cannady came in to record the save.

Game 2: A&M Kingsville 8, Newman 7
Multi-hit performances from Flax, Evans, Bugner and Thomas were not enough to overcome the Javelinas, who came roaring back from a 7-2 deficit to take game two and split the doubleheader.

Once again, the Jets got things going early, with Jarrod Flax and Tyler Evans both knocking singles to start the game.  A wild pitch put the runners at second and third, and an RBI groundout from Andrew Standish put Newman on the board with an early 1-0 lead.  Garrett Thomas followed with a triple to right center and Alex Lator smacked a double down the right field line, and just like that Newman took a 3-0 advantage into the bottom of the first.

A&M Kingsville cut into the Jet lead without recording a hit in the bottom of the inning, using two walks, a wild pitch and a groundout to score two runs and make it 3-2 in favor of the Jets.  Newman tacked another one on in the top of the second though, as Ben Wagner led off with a single up the middle, then moved over to second on a bunt single by Flax and later scored when Tyler Bugner bounced a single through the left side, putting the Jets up 4-2.  Newman extended that lead further in the top of the third, using two walks and a single to load the bases up with one away.  Tyler Evans lined a single to center to move everybody up 90 feet, and Tyler Bugner's ground ball to the left side got away from the shortstop, allowing two more runs to score and giving the Jets a 7-2 advantage heading to the bottom of the third.

The Javelinas began to cut into that lead in the bottom half of the inning though, loading up the bases with one away with a single, walk, and an error.  After a passed ball scored one run, an outfield miscue on a fly ball allowed two more runs to score, cutting the Jet lead to 7-5.  The following inning, the A&M Kingsville strung four hits together, coupled with a walk and a balk, to plate three more runs and take an 8-7 lead.

Newman finally got back on the board in the sixth, as Tyler Bugner doubled to left with one away to get things going.  After advancing to third on a wild pitch, Bugner would score on a two-out single through the left side from Garrett Thomas, tying the score at 8-8.  A&M Kingsville answered back in the bottom of the seventh though, using a leadoff single, sac bunt, and single to center to score their decisive ninth run.  Newman could not mount another rally in the game's final two innings, and dropped game two 9-8 for a split on the day.

With the split, the Jets are now 3-2 on the year (0-0 HC).  They will look to take the series tomorrow afternoon, with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
