Box Score KINGSVILLE, Tex. – The Jets could not overcome an early offensive surge from the Javelinas, and saw their rally in the top of the ninth fall short as A&M Kingsville took the series with an 8-7 win on Saturday afternoon.
Andrew Standish and
Daniel Jahnke both had two hits in the loss.
The Jets got on the board in the top of the first without recording a hit, as
Jarrod Flax was hit by a pitch to lead off the game, then moved to second on a balk and scored on a fielding error by the first baseman on
Tyler Evans' ground ball. A&M Kingsville answered right back in the bottom of the first with a pair of doubles to score a run, and it was 1-1 going to the second inning.
The Javelinas strung three hits together around a sac bunt to plate one run in the bottom of a second, but after a foul out to the catcher made it two outs with runners at first and second, it looked like the Jets might sneak away unscathed. However, a walk loaded up the bases, and then an error on the first baseman allowed two runs to score and extended the inning. A&M Kingsville made their opportunity count, adding two more runs on a wild pitch and a single to take a comfortable 6-1 lead after two innings of play.
Kingsville padded their lead in the bottom of the fourth inning, using a single and a double to start things off. After a fielding error allowed one run to score, an RBI groundout scored another run and the Javelinas led 8-1 going to the fifth inning.
The score remained that way until the seventh, when the Jets finally woke up the bats and sliced into the Javelina lead.
Alex Lator was hit by a pitch to lead the inning off, and after
Aaron Mack worked a full-count walk,
Daniel Jahnke singled through the right side to score Lator and move Mack over to the third.
Ben Wagner followed up with a two-strike single to left to score Mack, and the Jets looked to be in business with runners at first and second with nobody out. Two quick outs later, and the runners hadn't moved.
Tyler Bugner worked an eight-pitch walk to load them up though, and
Andrew Standish lined a single through the 5-6 hole to score Wagner and Jahnke and move Bugner up to second. Garrett Thomas greeted a new pitcher with a first-pitch single to left, which scored Bugner and brought the Jets within two. The next batter grounded out to end the rally, but the Jets trailed 8-6 with two and a half innings remaining.
Tyler Bugner got things going with one out in the ninth, reaching on a throwing error by the shortstop to breathe some life into the Jets.
Andrew Standish flied to right field, but the fielder misplayed it and the Jets had men at second and third. Garrett Thomas grounded out to short to score Bugner and put the tying run 90 feet away, but the next batter flied out to center to end the game.
Standish and Thomas both had two RBIs in the game, while Skylar Barnes,
Ryan Jenkins,
Ryan Skoubo and
Corey Mondello combined to toss five scoreless innings from the pen.
With the loss, the Jets are an even 3-3 on the season (0-0 HC). They will look to get back in the win column this weekend, when they host Wayne State in their home opener with doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday. First pitch on Friday afternoon is scheduled for 12 p.m. at McCarthy Field.
