Box Score WICHITA – Despite notching sixteen hits on the day, the Jets were unable to overcome a nine-run third inning from Emporia State, and fell to the Hornets 16-11 on Wednesday afternoon.
Tyler Bugner went 4-for-5 in the loss with three runs scored.
The first half of the game was all Emporia State. Dean Long launched a solo home run in the top of the first inning to put the Hornets on top, but most of the damage was done in the third inning. The Hornets took advantage of seven free passes from the Jets in the top of the third, as Newman used five different pitchers in the third inning alone. After loading up the bases several times, some timely hits from Emporia State helped clear the bases up, and they had plated nine runs by the end of it to take a commanding 10-0 lead.
The score remained that way until the top of the fifth, when Emporia tacked on five more runs thanks to six hits, taking a 15-0 lead to the bottom of the fifth. The Jets showed signs of life in the bottom of the fifth though, as they scored four runs on four hits to finally get on the board.
Daniel Jahnke got things rolling with a leadoff double to right center, and after
Ben Wagner and
Jarrod Flax reached on free passes, Jahnke scored on an RBI groundout. Wagner would come around to score on an infield single by
Andrew Standish, and Garrett Thomas hit a sac fly to center field to plate another run.
Alex Lator joined in with an RBI single to left, but the Jets still trailed 15-4 going to the sixth.
The Jet bats stayed hot in the bottom of the sixth, as they would score five more runs to cut further into the Hornets' lead. It was again a freshman who got things going for the offense, as
Brian Canfield led off with a pinch hit single to right.
Jarrod Flax followed with a single to center, and
Tyler Evans knocked a single into right center to score Canfield and move Flax over to third. After
Tyler Bugner was hit by a pitch to load up the bases,
Andrew Standish worked a walk to plate another run. After Evans scored on an RBI groundout from Garrett Thomas,
Alex Lator ripped a triple down the left field line to score two more runs, making it 15-9 as the game went to the seventh.
Emporia State tacked another run on in the top of the eighth inning, using a leadoff double and a single two batters later to score. The Jets responded in the bottom of the inning though, with
Tyler Bugner leading off with an infield single to short.
Andrew Standish followed suit by bouncing a single through the right side of the infield, and after both runners moved up 90 feet on a wild pitch, Garrett Thomas picked up Bugner with another RBI groundout.
Alex Lator was then hit by a pitch to put runners at the corners, with Standish scoring on the next play as
Aaron Mack bounced into a fielder's choice. Still, the Jets trailed 16-11 going to the final frame.
Tyler Evans and
Tyler Bugner both smacked singles with two outs in the ninth, but it was not enough to mount a comeback as the next batter struck out to end the game.
With the loss, the Jets fall to 5-6 on the season (0-0 HC). They will look to bounce back this weekend, when they host Minnesota State Mankato for a nonconference series. First pitch on Saturday is scheduled for 3 p.m. at McCarthy Field.
