WICHITA – The Newman baseball team starts a four-game homestand today (March 11) at 3 p.m. against Fort Hays State at McCarthy Field. It's the first of four straight home contests, and the first home game for NU since Feb. 25.
NU looks to get back on track as the Jets are currently 5-9 overall and have lost four straight games. The Jets started conference play this past weekend at Lubbock Christian, and the Chaps won all three games of the series. The NU offense got going in the finale, totaling 18 hits and 11 runs.
Tyler Evans went 3-for-5 with one RBI in that game, and
Andrew Standish was 2-for-5 with four RBI, three of which coming on a home run. Standish leads the team with 23 RBI and is hitting .300.
Garett Thomas has a team-high .397 batting average with a team-high 23 hits and six doubles. His .586 slugging also leads the team. Evans is at .389 with 21 hits, and
Tyler Bugner also has 21 hits with a .389 average. He leads the team with a .500 on base percentage.
The Tigers are 3-8 and on a four-game losing streak. FHSU played yesterday against Colorado Mines and lost, 16-12, in Hays. During the weekend, the Tigers lost three of four games to Nebraska-Kearney in Kearney, Neb. Austin Unrein leads the team with a .359 batting average and three home runs. Connor Ross is at .326. Three Tigers hit .300 or better.
Today's game is the first of a home and home series between the two teams. NU travels to Hays on April 15 for a 5 p.m. game at Larks Park.
After today's game, the Jets take on Oklahoma Panhandle State in a three-game series. The series starts with a doubleheader on Friday (March 13) at 3 p.m. Live stats and audio will be available.
