Box Score WICHITA – The Jets scored three in the first and never looked back, defeating the Tigers of Fort Hays State 11-0 in a run-rule victory Wednesday afternoon.
Tyler Evans and
Aaron Mack both went 2-for-4 in the win, and
Tyler Bugner reached base all four of his plate appearances and scored three times.
After
David Herrera retired the side in order in the top of the first inning, the Jet bats came out hot, with the first three hitters all notching singles to start the bottom of the inning.
Jarrod Flax led off with a single to right center, and after stealing second, scored on a single to right from
Tyler Evans. Evans would advance to second base on the throw home, and then score on a single to right from
Tyler Bugner, who advanced to second base when the throw home scooted away from the catcher. After Bugner moved over to third on a groundout,
Alex Lator flied out to deep center, giving Bugner time to score and putting the Jets ahead 3-0.
The Jets would tack on one more in the bottom of the second, which was more than enough for starter
David Herrera, who allowed just three hits through the first four innings of the game. Herrera ran into some trouble in the fifth though, and was lifted in favor of
Lane Ramsey, who promptly worked out of a bases loaded jam by getting the second baseman to ground into a 6-3 double play.
Newman went back to work in the bottom of the fifth, with
Tyler Bugner getting hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. After Bugner stole second,
Andrew Standish one-hopped the wall in left field for an RBI double, and later came around to score when
Alex Lator reached on an error by the left fielder. Lator would up at second on the error, and then scored on a two-out double from
Daniel Jahnke.
Lucas Norton followed up with a double of his own, which scored Jahnke and put the Jets ahead comfortably with an 8-0 lead.
The Jets weren't done yet though, as they went right back to work in the bottom of the sixth. They loaded up the bases with one away thanks to walks to
Tyler Bugner and
Andrew Standish, and a single from Garrett Thomas.
Alex Lator again flied to deep center, allowing all three runners to tag up, scoring one run and putting two men in scoring position.
Aaron Mack followed that up with a line drive single to center field, which scored Standish and Thomas and gave Newman their 11-0 lead.
Kevin Luman came on and worked a one-two-three seventh inning, striking out two to seal the run-rule victory and secure
David Herrera's first win of the season.
With the win, the Jets move to 6-9 on the season (0-3 Heartland). They will look to get back up to .500 this weekend, when they host Oklahoma Panhandle State for a three-game Heartland Conference series. The first pitch of Friday's doubleheader is scheduled for 3 p.m., with game three on Saturday set for 1 p.m. at McCarthy Field.
