Baseball Plays at Washburn at 5 p.m.

TOPEKA, Kan. – The Newman baseball team steps away from conference action today (March 31) to take on Washburn at 5 p.m. in Topeka, Kan. The two teams will play one nine inning game, and live stats will be available.
 
The Jets are currently 13-14 and 5-7 in the Heartland Conference after dropping a three-game series with Oklahoma Christian. NU took the first game by a 7-2 score, but then fell in a high-scoring contest, 14-11. In the final game of the series, the Jets held a lead into the ninth inning, but the Eagles scored six runs in the ninth inning to get the 10-6 victory.
 
Freshman Aaron Mack was named the Heartland Conference Hitter of the Week yesterday by the conference. The freshman from Madison, Wis, hit .545 with six hits, two doubles and five RBI. He totaled a team-high .727 slugging percentage and went 2-for-2 in stolen bases. For the season, Mack is now hitting .311 with five dubles, one home run and 21 RBI.
 
Sophomore Tyler Bugner, who was the Heartland Conference Freshman of the Year in 2014, leads the team with a .451 average with nine doubles, one triple and 19 RBI. He has a team-high .548 on base percentage and .559 slugging. He is a perfect 12-for-12 in stolen bases. He has started all 27 games in left field. Andrew Standish and Garett Thomas are both hitting .340. Thomas had a team-high 12 doubles, and Standish leads the team with 35 RBI.
 
The Ichabods are currently 20-8 and 14-6 in the MIAA. They split a four-game series with Lindenwood over the weekend in St. Charles, Mo. The WU offense has five starters hitter better than .300. Krane Riley is at .380 with eight doubles, four triples and three homers. Parker Gibson is at .374, and Kyle Carnaham hits .360. At .326 with 10 doubles and five RBI is Tanner Triggs. Tanner Johnson is hitting .302.
 
In their previous meeting this season in Wichita, the Jets pulled out to a 6-1 win over No. 19-ranked Washburn. Mack and Bugner both went 2-for-4 and Chase Wilson pitched 6 innings with only five hits to get the win.
 
After today's game, the Jets travel to St. Mary's for a three-game series on Thursday and Friday in San Antonio, Texas.
