LUBBOCK, Texas – The Newman baseball team starts Heartland Conference play today (March 6) with a doubleheader at Lubbock Christian. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. with video, audio and live stats available.
The Jets are back in action for the first time since Feb. 25, a nine day layoff, due to weather. Snow and cold weather conditions in Wichita forced NU to cancel last weekend's series with Minnesota State.
NU is currently 5-6 overall and 3-2 on the road. The Jet offense is led by
Garett Thomas, who has a .404 average and has a team-high 19 hits. The junior third baseman has totaled four doubles, one triple and one home run. His 15 RBI are second on the team and he has a team-high .596 slugging percentage. Sophomore outfielder
Tyler Bugner is hitting .405 with an on base percentage of .519. He leads the team in runs scored at 15.
The pitching staff is led by
Lucas Schauer, likely the game one starter, who is 2-1 in three starts. He has a 3.1 ERA in 20. 1 innings worked. The sophomore has 13 strikeouts and allowed only seven earned runs.
Cody Fredericksen, another starting pitcher, is 1-0 with a 4.91 ERA. Batters are hitting only .211 against the leftie.
Joe Cannady is a key reliever with a 0.00 ERA in 4.1 innings. He has one save and opponents are hitting only .071 against him.
Corey Mondello also has one save this season.
The Chaps are 7-8 overall and 0-1 in the Heartland Conference. LCU started Heartland play last Friday and lost, 8-4, at UA Fort Smith. The other two games of the series were canceled due to the weather. In their most recent contest, the Chaps lost to Wayland Baptist, 11-10, in Lubbock on March 3. LCU is on a three-game losing streak, but are 5-3 at home this season.
Game three of the series will be played on Saturday (March 7) at 1 p.m.
