Baseball Hosts St. Edward’s in Final Season Series

WICHITA – The Newman baseball team hosts St. Edward's in the final three games of the season on Friday and Saturday (May 1-2). The series starts with a doubleheader today at 3 p.m. at McCarthy Field. KGSO 1410 AM will carry the broadcast for game one and three with Blake Cripps on the call. Live stats are also available.
 
The Jets have won seven of their last nine games, including two straight games. NU defeated William Jewell on Wednesday (April 29) by the score of 14-7. The Jets scored nine runs in the seventh inning to pull away for the victory. NU's offense is led by Tyler Bugner with a .439 average, 13 doubles and 44 runs scored. He has a .523 on base percentage, which leads the Heartland Conference. He is 21-for-22 in stolen bases. Andrew Standish is hitting .343 with a conference-high 50 RBI. Garett Thomas is at .337 with a team-high 18 doubles. Six Jets are hitting above .300.
 
Luxas Schauer is the projected game one starter. He leads the team with an 8-3 record and 45 strikeouts. Cody Fredericksen is scheduled to start Senior Day on Saturday.
 
Eight NU seniors will be recognized during Saturday's game. The Senior Day festivities start at 12:40 p.m. with the game at 1 p.m.
 
The Hilltoppers currently lead the Heartland Conference with a 20-4 record, and they are 35-10 overall. SEU has an eight-game winning streak coming into today's doubleheader. The Hilltoppers defeated Texas A&M-International, Texas A&M-Kingsville, Oklahoma Panhandle State and St. Mary's during the stretch. SEU has five three-game conference sweeps this season. Two of their four losses are to St. Mary's, their only series loss of the season.
 
J.D. Arrowood leads the team with a .374 average, 61 hits, 17 doubles and 41 RBI. Joseph Olson is hitting .370. A.J. Hermanson has a team-high four home runs with a .366 average. Nate Turner is hitting .325.
 
Cameron Stanton and Collin Sherrod should start this weekend. Staton is 7-0 with a 2.20 ERA, and Sherrod is 7-1 with a 2.81 ERA. Cam Hatch has a team-high eight saves with a 2.08 ERA.
