WICHITA – The Newman men's soccer team hosts rival Friends University tonight (Sept. 18) at 7:30 p.m. at Wilkins Field. Live stats are available along with a video stream.
The Jets return from a two-match trip to Colorado. NU went 0-1-1 against two RMAC teams. A week ago, the Jets traveled to Metro State and played them to a 1-1 draw.
Luca Anelli scored a goal late in regulation to knot the score at 1-1 and two overtime periods went scoreless. On Sunday at UCCS, the Mountain Lions tallied the game-winner in the 82nd minute to get a 2-1 win over the Jets. For NU, Tomas Rossi netted the Jet goal.
For the season, the Jets are currently 1-2-1 on the season with a season-opening win over at William Jewell. Since the start, the Jets have played three straight RMAC opponents with a record of 0-2-1.
Dominic Nwagwu has a team-high two goals on the season, both in the win at WJC.
Taylor Henry has a goal and an assist. Adding goals this season are Anelli and Rossi.
Pedro Augusto,
Bernardo Vilas Boas and
Gefte Blanc all have totaled one assist.
The Falcons are currently 2-2-1 on the season. In their most recent match, Friends won, 6-1, at Bacone College on Tuesday (Sept. 15). The Falcons started the season with two home losses against Midland and Johnson & Wales. FU then got its first win of the season over Southwestern Assemblies of God in Waxahachie, Texas. The Falcons also tied Texas College, 1-1, on Sept. 11 in Tyler, Texas.
In 2014, the Jets defeated the Falcons, 4-3, at Wilkins Field. NU pulled out to a 4-1 advantage in the contest. Henry, Anelli, Blanc and
Lucas Hanson all scored in the victory.
The Jets return to NCAA Division II play on Sunday (Sept. 20) at Midwestern State in Wichita Falls, Texas. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
