WICHITA, Kan. — Picking up a bonus-point victory and a win at the buzzer of another bout provided excitement, but the Newman wrestling team was unable to get past No. 10 Lindenwood in its first MIAA dual meet of the season, falling 33-7 Wednesday evening at Fugate Gymnasium.
Junior Dustin Reed provided the biggest spark of the night for the Jets (0-1, 0-1 MIAA), rolling up three takedowns and a reversal to top Lindenwood's Derek Heil at 125 pounds, pushing his record to 10-1 on the season.
Jet newcomer Kyle Ryan dueled with Kyle Summers of the Lions (5-2, 1-1 MIAA) in the most entertaining bout of the night at 184 before ultimately coming out with the 8-7 victory, his first in a Newman uniform.
Lindenwood's Batchka Zulkhuu held off a hard-charging Heath Gray for a 5-4 win at 174, getting a riding time point to seal the win, and Noel Torres couldn't find what would be the tying takedown in the final seconds of his 5-3 loss to Kyle Jolas at 165. Both those Lindenwood grapplers are ranked in the top five at their weight in Super Region 3.
The Jets have less than 24 hours off, traveling to face Central Missouri at 7 p.m. Thursday. See below for the box score and bout-by-bout recap.
Lindenwood 33, Newman 7
285: Jacob Borgmeyer, LWU won by forfeit.
125: Dustin Reed, NU maj. dec. Derek Heil 10-1.
Reed grabbed the opening takedown and didn't let Heil get any closer than that, getting a reverse in the second period and two more takedowns in the third to comfortably cruise to his 10th win of the year.
133: Hunter Haralson, LWU dec. Jake Gentzler 6-1.
Gentzler held his own against the No. 6 wrestler in the country at 133, avoiding being turned while Haralson built up a large riding time advantage, and gaining his point on an escape in the third period.
141: Jared Mestas, LWU dec. Garrett Whitson 8-2.
Whitson got out from bottom in the second period to get things to 2-1, but a four-point move midway through the third swung the momentum right back in Mestas' favor. Whitson was able to hold off the late takedown that would have made it a major decision.
149: Colton Orlando, LWU dec. Forlanda Parker 7-3.
Parker earned the first takedown of the bout, but Orlando was able to escape and get a takedown of his own before the first three minutes were up. Down 4-2 after two periods, Parker escaped to start the third, but Orlando was the one to get the clinching takedown.
157: Terrel Wilbourn, LWU won by forfeit.
165: Kyle Jolas, LWU dec. Noel Torres 5-3.
Down 4-0 after a reversal in the second by Jolas, Torres answered with a reversal of his own to cut it to 4-2 entering the final two minutes. An escape midway through the third pulled him within one, but with the riding time point assured, Jolas avoided the tying takedown.
174: Batchka Zulkhuu, LWU dec. Heath Gray 5-4.
Turning an 2-0 deficit into a 3-2 lead with an escape followed by a takedown along the edge with seconds left in the first period, Gray tied things up at 4-4 with an escape in the third period. Despite numerous shots, and a stall warning against Zulkhuu, Gray couldn't manage to get what would have been a winning takedown, falling on the riding time point.
184: Kyle Ryan, NU dec. Kyle Summers 8-7.
Got out fast with a takedown midway through the first period to build a lead and a riding time advantage, Ryan saw himself nearly pinned on a six-point move by Summers in the second period before fighting off his back. An escape brought him within 6-3, and a reversal in the third made it 6-5, and essentially 6-6 with Ryan's riding time point assured. Still, he cut Summers to give the Lion the lead before locking in for the winning takedown in the final 30 seconds.
197: Dillon Archer, LWU pinned Dalton Weidl 3:08.
Facing an 8-3 deficit after the first period, Weidl had to score points quickly to get back in it, but ended up getting caught for the fall eight seconds after the first whistle of the second period.
