Jets Take Long Roadtrip To Continue Conference Play

WICHITA, Kan. — Looking to get back on track after suffering its first loss in six Heartland Conference games this season, the Newman men's soccer team begins its longest stretch away from home this season with games against Eastern New Mexico and West Texas A&M this Thursday and Saturday.

SCOUTING NEWMAN

The Jets (6-3-1, 4-1-1, 13 pts Heartland) ran their unbeaten streak to seven matches with a 3-1 victory over Dallas Baptist last Thursday, scoring all three goals in the first six minutes. That nearly perfect start to league play was snapped by No. 3 St. Edward's, who earned a 3-1 win Saturday afternoon.

Eastern New Mexico (4-5-1, 2-4-0, 6 pts Heartland) is coming off a stretch of three matches in five days, falling 1-0 to Texas-Permian Basin Thursday, but grabbing a 2-1 victory over Lubbock Christian Saturday and besting Southern Nazarene 2-0 in nonconference action Monday.

West Texas A&M (7-2-1, 4-1-1, 13 pts Heartland) put together a 1-0-1 week to stay near the top of the league standings, getting by Lubbock Christian 2-1 last Thursday before seeing a four-game winning streak come to an end with a 0-0 draw at home against Texas-Permian Basin.

NOTES

-The Jets have gotten off to a solid start against the new affiliate members of the expanded Heartland Conference. Newman topped Texas-Permian Basin 3-0 and Midwestern State 1-0 so far. The Greyhounds and Buffs are the other two affiliate members.

-Their game against Newman is the middle point of a string of seven consecutive games at home for the Greyhounds. The go from Sept. 24 until Oct. 20 without leaving the friendly confines of Portales, New Mexico.

-The Buffs lead the Heartland in a number of team categories, including shots per game (17.6), shots on goal per game (8.4) and scoring (2.3 goals per game). They've also shut out their opponent in half the matches played this season.
