Box Score WICHITA FALLS, Texas — Back in the Heartland Conference semifinals, the Newman men's soccer team played even for long stretches with top seed and host Midwestern State, but their season came to an end with a 2-0 loss Friday night.
KEY MOMENT
The Jets (10-8-2) were still in the mood for an upset against the No. 8 Mustangs (16-2-1) despite trailing 1-0 midway through the second half, but a second goal provided the cushion MSU needed to milk the rest of the clock. With just over 20 minutes to play, the hosts got that, as Kyle Baccus put home a rebound shot after a diving save by Newman keeper Blake Andrews.
SCORING PLAYS
52'-MSU-Leon Taylor, assist Pierre Bocquet. Bocquet's corner from the right side crossed the box and landed in front of Taylor, who took a crack at it from the top of the box, sliding it inside the far post.
67'-MSU-Kyle Baccus, assist Gabriel Cavalcante. An excellent shot by Cavalcante was saved by Newman keeper Blake Andrews, but Baccus was there to lift the ball over him for the score.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Midwestern State controlled the action in the opening minutes, but outside of a cursory shot that went wide in the fourth minute, neither team got a shot off in the first 14-plus minutes. Andrews made a nice play to intercept a pass in the 14th, and the two teams traded wide shots over the next few minutes.
-MSU got a solid chance on a restart in the 21st, as an ensuing header glanced off the crossbar, but the Jets began to hold on for long stretches from there. Luca Anelli got the Jets' first shot on goal in the 27th, and Fernando Rubio Garcia got off a dangerous chance in the 31st, although his shot sailed wide.
-Rubio Garcia got another chance after a long possession in the 36th, but that shot went high. Just a few minutes later, the Mustangs' Jacob Hernandez found himself inside the box with the ball, but his strike was blocked by Andreas Agrell to keep it scoreless.
-Tommy Fiszel picked up Newman's best chance of the first half, pushing through the defense on the left side and uncorking a shot that crossed the face of the goal and slipped just wide in the 42nd. MSU ended the half with a wide open shot from inside the box off a deflection, but the chance flew well high.
-The Mustangs didn't gain an edge in possession in the second half, but was able to take advantage of a few solid chances. Newman's Gefte Blanc cleared the first good chance for MSU with an excellent tackle, but the Mustangs were able to hold on to the ball and converted their first goal less than a minute later.
-Andrews made a nice play to keep it 1-0 in the 59th, as the Mustangs had a 2-on-1 and slipped the ball behind the Jet defense, but Andrews beat the MSU attacker to the ball. Newman got another chance in the 64th, as Anelli's hustle turned into a shot at close range that was saved, but Newman couldn't get a shot off on the ensuing corner.
-MSU's second goal allowed the hosts to settle back into a defensive alignment, making the Jets have to work that much harder to crack the back line. Anelli got off two more shots late in the second half, as Newman was able to get the ball deep into the MSU half, but not past the back line.
NOTES
-MSU enjoyed a 14-12 advantage in shots, with things all even in the second half at 7-7. Andrews finished the night with three saves.
-This season is the third straight with a trip to the conference semifinals for the Jets, as well as the third consecutive 10-win season.
