WICHITA, Kan. — Riding a four-game winning streak into its first midweek contest, the Newman baseball team will make the short trip to Topeka for a single game against Washburn Tuesday afternoon at 2.

The Jets (5-2) took part in four hard-fought games last weekend in their home opener against Wayne State (Neb.), winning all four by an average of 1.5 runs. They got complete-game victories by Lucas Schauer and Kane McCarthy, as well as some clutch hitting, including a 9-for-14 weekend out of Tyler Bugner and a three-run bomb from Aaron Mack.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
The Ichabods (4-3) have won two straight after finishing the Southern Arkansas Tournament with two impressive wins, topping Central Oklahoma 16-5 and host SAU 13-5. That came after falling 7-3 to Oklahoma Christian in the tournament opener. This is the home opener for the Ichabods, who begin MIAA conference play this weekend.

-Bugner somehow significantly boosted his .444 batting average from the opening weekend. The junior's .565 mark leads all Heartland Conference batters, and he has a six-game hitting streak and seven-game streak of reaching base safely.
-The Jets' run against Wayne State was the team's first sweep in a four-game series since turning back Cameron four straight times in 2012. That came against the side chosen to finish sixth in the NSIC. Washburn was picked sixth in the MIAA.
-The Ichabods have already faced Southern Arkansas three times this year, handing them two of their three losses in nonconference play. The Muleriders were ranked in the top 15 nationally. Washburn is averaging an impressive 7.57 runs per game in the early going.
