WICHITA, Kan. — Picking up stellar efforts from throughout its lineup and pitching staff to win six of its first eight games, the Newman baseball team continues nonconference play with a four-game series against Southwest Minnesota State Saturday and Sunday at McCarthy Field.
SCOUTING NEWMAN
The Jets (6-2) followed up four narrow wins over Wayne State (Neb.) last weekend with a 15-5 thumping of Washburn Tuesday to run their winning streak to five in a row. They pumped out 19 hits against the Ichabods, scoring in all but two innings in one of its best offensive showing in recent years. All-American Tyler Bugner led the way with a 4-for-6 effort at the plate.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
The Mustangs (0-0) will kick off their season with the trip to Wichita, their only games until a spring break trip to Arizona in two weeks. They went 21-29 overall last season, including a 14-20 mark in NSIC play. SMSU returns four starters in the field, as well as three pitchers who saw action in at least 10 games.

-Bugner continues to boost his batting average, going from .444 after the opening weekend, to .565 after last weekend's series against WSC, to a .586 clip after Tuesday's win over Washburn. He has reached base safely in all eight Newman games, and has a current seven-game hitting streak.
-It is the second straight weekend series in which the Jets will face a team from the Northern Sun that is making its season debut. The Mustangs were picked ninth out of 15 teams in the conference's preseason poll, while last weekend's opponent, Wayne State, was slotted sixth.
