Jets Look To Keep Win Streak Alive At Emporia

WICHITA, Kan. — Riding a nine-game winning streak that helped it get off to its best start in years, the Newman baseball team starts its final week before conference play with a nonconference matchup at Emporia State Tuesday afternoon at 3.

SCOUTING NEWMAN

The Jets (10-2) picked up five victories fairly easy victories last week, including a four-game sweep of Southwest Minnesota State over the weekend. That was Newman's second straight four-game sweep after dispatching Wayne State a week earlier. A 4-1 win over the Mustangs in the first game Sunday was the only one of the five last week that didn't come by double digits.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENT

The Hornets (9-3) are off to nearly as hot of a start as the Jets, grabbing wins in their past four games and taking 9 of their first 12 to begin the season. That includes a series win against Tarleton State two weeks ago, and an impressive sweep of Pittsburg State to begin their MIAA conference slate that saw ESU score a combined 55 runs.

                LEADERS

                Evan Koehler, Senior-.408 avg., 17 runs, 4 2B, 8 HR, 21 RBI, 3 SB, .980 slg.

                Wade Hanna, Junior-.386 avg., 13 runs, 4 2B, 3 3B, 1 HR, 11 RBI, 3 SB

    Tyler Stubblefield, Junior-2-0, 2.55 ERA, 4 app., 24.2 IP, 6 BB, 31 SO

                Jordan Plank, Junior-2-0, 0.73 ERA, 6 app., 12.1 IP, 3 BB, 17 SO

NOTES

-While the Hornets may have three losses to their name after the first month of the season, those three defeats came by one run each as ESU still went on to win each of the series. In comparison, the Hornets have won their nine games by a total of 69 runs, or an average of 7.7 per game.

-The 10-2 start, as well as the current nine-game win streak by the Jets, are the best marks in the team's Division II era. The previous best start came in 2012, as the Jets lost their first four but responded with seven wins in a row to go 7-5 over their first 12 games. One has to go back to March 2009 to see the team's last eight-game win streak.

-The Jets fell in both games last year to Emporia State, 16-11 at home and 10-5 on the road. The Hornets make the return trip to Wichita next Tuesday for a game at McCarthy Field.
