Jets Get Second Crack To Topple Emporia State

WICHITA, Kan. — Continuing its recent string of tough games, the Newman baseball team faces off against another ranked foe as No. 14 Emporia State makes the return trip to Wichita for a 5 p.m. contest at McCarthy Field Tuesday.

SCOUTING NEWMAN

The Jets (13-7) went from ecstatic to dismayed in their weekend series against No. 10 Lubbock Christian, walking off with a win in the opener, but dropping a 1-0 pitcher's duel in the second game Friday and falling in extra innings in the finale Saturday for just their second two-game losing streak of the season.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENT

The Hornets (14-5) finally ran into a team that could cool off their red-hot offense last weekend, scoring just six total runs and losing two out of three to Missouri Southern in a three-game MIAA series. Prior to that set, Newman was the only team in eight games to keep the ESU offense in single digits.

LEADERS

                Daniel LaMunyon-.453 avg., 20 runs, 7 2B, 1 3B, 1 HR, 12 RBI, 5 SB

                Wade Hanna-.389 avg., 19 runs, 7 2B, 3 3B, 2 HR, 16 RBI, 3 SB

                Evan Koehler-.384 avg., 24 runs, 7 2B, 11 HR, 30 RBI, .932 slg., 5 SB

                Tyler Stubblefield-4-0, 2.21 ERA, 36.2 IP, 11 BB, 45 SO

                Grant Bachura-0-0, 2.35 ERA, 5 app., 7.2 IP, 3 BB, 7 SO

NOTES

-The Hornets have scored at least 13 runs on eight different occasions in their 19 games, including three games with 20-plus runs. It comes as no surprise then that ESU is sixth in the nation, averaging 9.9 runs per game.

-A two-run burst by Emporia State in the bottom of the third proved to be the difference in a 3-1 win for the Hornets in the first meeting this season two weeks ago. Lucas Norton had two hits in the game for the Jets, including a lead-off home run to give the guests the early lead.
