WICHITA, Kan. — Another tight dual saw the Newman wrestling team put up a fight, yet fall in a close one, pushing Fort Hays State before dropping a 26-15 decision in MIAA action Wednesday night at Fugate Gymnasium.
Dustin Reed, Tyler Mies, Colton Duhr and Kyle Ryan all extended their personal winning streaks after winning titles at Sunday's Kansas Cup, with all four earning comfortable victories to ring up the team points for the No. 22 Jets (0-3, 0-3 MIAA). In the most exciting bout of the night, Dalton Weidl proved he's capable of wrestling with the best in the country, falling in the final seconds to second-ranked Jon Inman.
The No. 16 Tigers (4-4, 1-1 MIAA) didn't lock the match up until Inman's 9-7 win at 197. Continuing a positive trend from last week's match against Nebraska-Kearney, Wednesday's final score was the closest the Jets have gotten to the Tigers in their Division II history.
Newman doesn't get long to rest, turning around to host Pratt CC Thursday night back at Fugate Gymnasium for Senior Night.
RESULTS
125: No. 2 Dustin Reed (NU) dec. Conrad Cole 9-2.
An early takedown followed by a four-point nearfall in the first period gave Reed an early lead on the way to his fifth straight victory.
133: Kaleb Furr (FHSU) dec. Cole Sutterfield 1-0.
A slow first period rolled into a second stanza that saw Furr score the only point of the match on an escape. Sutterfield chose neutral to start the third, and nearly got in on a winning takedown, but couldn't lock up the points.
141: No. 10 Brandon Ball (FHSU) won by forfeit.
149: No. 9 Tyler Mies (NU) md. William Homalon 16-7.
A back-and-forth first period didn't become settled until Mies answered Homalon with a reversal and added four back points to go up 9-4. A pair of takedowns in the third helped build over three minutes of riding time and lock up the major.
157: Greg Tooley (FHSU) tf. Forlanda Parker 2:26 (16-0).
Tooley was able to grab the opening takedown and work Parker over, although the Newman grappler wouldn't surrender the pin.
165: Colton Duhr (NU) tf. Kyler Mick 7:00 (18-2).
Duhr started out strong with a takedown and eight nearfall points while also getting Mick called for a stall in the first. Another takedown and four back points in the third closed out the tech fall.
174: Kyle Ryan (NU) dec. Micquille Robinson 9-4.
After giving up the opening takedown, Ryan escaped and then threw Robinson right to his back. The Tiger was nearly pinned, barely holding on for nearly a minute to avoid the fall. Robinson didn't get any closer to regaining the lead, although he was able to slow down the scoring from there.
184: Rakim Dean (FHSU) tf. Noah Ornelas 3:18 (16-0).
Dean was able to work a tilt against Ornelas to build up a big lead in the first and finish off the bout in the second.
197: No. 2 Jon Inman (FHSU) dec. Dalton Weidl 9-7.
Weidl, who took Inman down first in the final of Sunday's Kansas Cup, repeated the feat Wednesday. Inman snapped around for a reversal and his first lead early in the second at 3-2. Weidl took the lead twice in the third, first grabbing a quick escape and following with a takedown late, but Inman answered with a takedown of his own with 10 seconds left that gave him the one-point lead and locked up riding time.
285: No. 9 Christian Lance (FHSU) md. Thor Balavage 11-2.
Lance was the aggressor, and although Balavage didn't allow any takedown to come easily, Lance managed to get two in the first period and one in each of the final two.
