WICHITA, Kan. — After a long two months of the tournament season, the Newman wrestling team opens up action in 2017 with its first dual meet of the year, traveling to Central Missouri for an MIAA matchup Friday night.
SCOUTING NEWMAN
The Jets are coming off of a nearly three-week break for the holidays, but went into the break on a high note at the Midwest Classic. Both Dustin Reed and Tyler Mies placed at the prestigious event, with Reed coming in second at 125 pounds and Mies seventh at 149. Both wrestlers crossed into double-digit victories on the season thanks to the impressive weekend.

SCOUTING THE MULES
Central Missouri (3-0, 0-0 MIAA) slipped by Drury 25-24 on Wednesday for its third dual victory of the season. Cody Carson has already rolled up a 20-5 mark on the season, and is regionally ranked, while Allan Person also appears in the rankings.

IN THE RANKINGS
The Jets are back into the national team rankings at No. 23 after their showing before Christmas. Reed bumped up to No. 4 nationally at 125, while Mies is back in at No. 11 at 149. Newman sits at No. 9 in Super Region 4, with Reed second, Mies third and Dalton Weidl fourth at 197.
The Mules sit 13th in Super Region 3, while Carson is fifth at 174 and Person sixth at 184.
HISTORY LESSON
UCM leads the all-time dual series against Newman 8-3, and earned a 22-16 victory last season.
