WARRENSBURG, Mo. — The Newman wrestling team got off to a fast start, but saw that lead chipped away at as Central Missouri earned a 32-13 victory in each team's first MIAA dual of the season Friday night.
Dustin Reed built a lead then earned the fall at 5:55 to start things off at 125 pounds, giving the Jets (0-1, 0-1 MIAA) a 6-0 lead. Tyler Mies followed three weights later, ripping off nearfall points for a blazing 18-0 technical fall in the first period. That tied the score at 10-10 after the Jets were docked a point for unsportsmanlike conduct at an earlier weight.
The Mules (4-0, 1-0 MIAA) would go on a charge from there though, building an insurmountable lead over the next five weights before a thriller to end the night. At 285, Thor Balavage nearly had a takedown then fought off one from his opponent at the horn to send the bout into overtime, where the freshman got the takedown and a 3-1 win.
Newman is back in action Jan. 14 at the Midwest Duals, hosted by Nebraska-Kearney.
