Box Score EMPORIA, Kan. – The Newman baseball team took on Emporia State who is currently ranked No. 12 in the nation Wednesday evening on the road, but fell 7-6 in a hard fought extra inning contest.
The Jets (7-13) got off to a quick start in the top of the first, thanks to a two-run home run from
Nick Griffin that scored
Brian Canfield as well to put Newman out in front 2-0.
Wade Winter was the starting pitcher and held the Hornets (16-4) scoreless in the first-two innings of the contest.
Emporia State tacked on a run in the bottom of the third inning to cut into the Jet lead to make it 2-1 after three complete innings. Neither team could get anything going in the fourth inning but the Jets extended their lead out to 6-1 in the top of the fifth by scoring four runs.
Canfield brought
Channing Williams home from third base to begin the scoring in the top of the fifth with a RBI single to center field. The next at-bat Griffin launched his second home run of the evening over the outfield fence to score
Jacob Hamerle and Canfield to complete the scoring for the inning and make the score 6-1 in favor of Newman.
The Hornets added another run in the bottom of fifth and then three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, which put the score at 6-5. Newman could only get two runners on base in sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth innings, however Emporia State evened up the score at 6-6 in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings.
The Jets and Hornets would battle it out for three extra innings with quality pitching coming from both teams in extras but Emporia State walked away with a 7-6 victory in the 12th inning.
Griffin went 3-of-5 from the plate with five RBIs, including two runs and two home runs to lead the Jets in batting.
Newman heads to Oklahoma Panhandle State to begin its second Heartland Conference series of the season, beginning with a doubleheader Friday and a single game Saturday afternoon to complete the week.
