WICHITA, Kan. — Taking part in its final nonconference weekend action, the Newman baseball team hits the road to face Texas-Permian Basin and Colorado Mines in Odessa, Texas on Friday and Saturday.
The Jets (9-14), who will go a full three weeks between home games, are coming off a successful weekend, taking a Heartland Conference series at Oklahoma Panhandle in which they scored 31 runs in three games.
UTPB (6-14) got off to a hot start this season, opening at 6-1 in February, but since struggling with a 13-game losing streak. The Falcons will be back at home after a weekend at Eastern New Mexico that saw them fall in four games, including a pair of one-run contests.
The Falcons will host a total of six games this weekend, starting with the doubleheader against Newman at 1 p.m. Friday.
Colorado Mines (13-8) has won six of its past seven, including a doubleheader sweep of Sioux Falls, followed by winning three out of four in a RMAC series against Metro State. The Jets and Orediggers will match up for a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Saturday.
NOTES
-The Jets are taking advantage of all the small opportunities they can this season. They are 10th in the country in getting hit by pitches, 20th in sacrifice bunts, and 30th in walks. They also allow opponents few free chances, coming in 25th with a .970 fielding percentage.
-Newman shortstop Nick Griffin will look to keep his impressive output going at the plate. The senior was named Heartland Conference Hitter of the Week after putting up three home runs and 11 RBIs in five games last week, and he added a South Central Region hitter of the week nod earlier this week.
