EDMOND, Okla. — Tyler Mies took down a nationally ranked opponent, but the Newman wrestling team suffered a 33-6 setback Wednesday evening at the hands of No. 13 Central Oklahoma in MIAA dual action.

Mies picked up a third-period escape to notch the winning point in a 4-3 victory over No. 7 Bryan Dutton at 157 pounds to get the Jets (2-3, 0-2 MIAA) on the board against the Bronchos (11-2, 3-0 MIAA).

At 184, No. 10 Noel Torres escaped and added a takedown in the final period to earn a 6-5 decision over Joel Dixon to earn the only other points of the night for the Jets, although the guests had more than a few close calls.

In a matchup featuring a pair of ranked foes, No. 8 Dalton Weidl went to overtime with UCO's No. 6 Caleb Cotter after trading escapes in regulation. Weidl nearly finished off a double for the winning takedown in sudden victory, but Cotter wound up getting the edge in the first tiebreaker. Cotter rode Weidl out in the first 30 seconds, then Weidl chose to let him up to go for the takedown, but was instead taken down to seal a 4-1 decision.

At 133, Vincent Eremita fell 1-0 thanks to a third-period escape, Brandon Conrad had it tied late until surrendering a takedown in a 4-2 defeat, and Mario Rodriguez made a comeback against No. 7 Will Steltzlen before dropping an 11-8 decision.

The Jets face another MIAA foe Friday, hosting Lindenwood in their final home dual of the season back at Fugate Gymnasium.
