WICHITA, Kan. — With an impressive couple months of tournaments behind it, the Newman wrestling team kicks off dual season Tuesday evening with an MIAA matchup against Central Missouri at Fugate Gymnasium.
In addition, the Jets will celebrate the team's four seniors before the match, which is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
SCOUTING NEWMAN
The Jets (0-0, 0-0 MIAA) offered up some solid finishes through six individual tournaments during the fall semester, capped off with a 15th-place finish out of 35 teams at the prestigious Midwest Classic in December. Six Newman wrestlers have already reached double-digit wins on the season, led by Noel Torres' 19-2 mark.
SCOUTING THE MULES
Central Missouri (2-5, 0-0 MIAA) has faced a tough challenge in duals in the early part of the season, including an 0-3 day Saturday at the Maverick Duals, where the Mules fell to two nationally-ranked teams. The Mules placed 24th at the Midwest Classic, with John Feeney in eighth at 125 their only placer.
IN THE RANKINGS
Using top four finishes at the Midwest Classic, Torres and Dalton Weidl shot into the individual rankings by the NWCA. Weidl's second-place finish helped him to eighth in the rankings at 285, and Torres' impressive start has him 10th at 184.
UCM's lone ranked wrestler is Feeney, coming in 12th at 125. Both teams are receiving votes in the team poll.
