AUSTIN, Tex – The Newman women's soccer team started their final two game road trip of the regular season off on a bang Thursday afternoon (Oct. 11) defeating conference leading St. Edward's, 2-0. The Jets ended an (0-12-3) winless streak against St. Edward's dating all the way back to October, 23 2009. With the win the Jets improve to 9-1-3 on the year and climb closer towards the top of the conference improving to 5-1-3 in the Heartland.
The first half was much like the same game that was played three weeks ago at Wilkins Field, a defensive battle. The two teams played to a first half draw once again with the offense once again hard to find. The Jets outshot the Hilltoppers 6-2 in the first half.
The Jets offensive pressure caused havoc for the Hilltoppers in the second half. The Jets struck first blood in the 62nd minute as Wichita, KS Senior, Colleen Howland found the back of the net, recording her eighth goal of the year, assisted by Vanessa Ortiz giving the Jets the 1-0 lead.
The Jets pressure continued to wear down the backline for St. Edwards. Grace Linton provided the Jets an extra goal in the 76th minute adding in her team leading tenth goal of the year coming off a cross by Colleen Howland giving the Jets a 2-0 lead.
The Jets defense never let up in the final 14 minutes securing their ninth shutout on the season. Newman outshot St. Edward's 12-8, also outshooting them 5-4 on target.
The Jets will finish their final road game of the regular season on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 13) against Dallas Baptist, who currently sits in second place in the Heartland Conference. Kickoff is scheduled for 12pm from Patriot Soccer Field in Dallas, TX.
