Women's Bowling Wins Mid-States Championships for Second Straight Year - Men Finish 3rd with Strong Performance

WICHITA, Kan. – The Newman men's and women's bowling teams hosted the Mid-States Championships Saturday (Oct. 20) and Sunday (Oct. 21). The tournament contained 84 teams with 27 varsity women's teams, 31 varsity men's teams and 26 junior varsity teams. The tournament held eight of the top twenty teams from last year including the defending women's national champions Lindenwood University.

The women's team looking to win the event for the second straight year finished the first day in 6th place knocking down 5437 pins, trailing 1st place Lindenwood by 251 pins after the six games. Topeka, KS freshman Ashton Anderson led the Jets after the first day sitting in third place individually averaging 197.50 per six games on Saturday. Kristin Machacek set in 18th and Leanne Vastbinder in 24th after the first day of competition.

On Sunday the Jets secured the fifth seed headed into bracket play. The Jets opened up the first round knocking off the four seed Midland. In the Quarterfinals the Jets defeated the eight seed Martin Methodist setting up a cross town matchup against Wichita State. The Jets defended their championship from a year ago defeating Wichita State to claim the 2018 Mid-States Championships. Ashton Anderson landed as the lone Jets bowler on the All-Tournament team after a solid first day of individual play.

The men's side of things the Jets sat in 2nd place overall after a strong showing knocking down 5890 pins through the six games, trailing Grand View University by just 34 pins for the top spot. Individually after the first day Jake Provenzano set in 5th place knocking down 1263 pins in the six games. Nathan Brantley set in 23rd while John Baeten rounded out the top 25.

The Jets entered Sunday's bracket play as the one seed defeating Kansas Wesleyan in first round action. The Jets fell to across town Wichita State in the semifinals. The Jets wrapped up the weekend in 3rd place. Jake Provenzano earned his third all-tournament team. Provenzano has finished in the top 10 in all four events this year while finishing in the top five in three of the four tournaments in the early season.

The Jets will travel next Saturday (Oct. 27) and Sunday (Oct. 28) to St. Charles, MO. for the Lion's Classic held at the St. Charles Lanes hosted by Lindenwood University.
