Linton's Hat Trick Lifts Jets on Senior Day

WICHITA, KAN – On a day specifically honoring the 2018 seniors the Newman University women's soccer team, sent them out with a bang Saturday afternoon (Oct. 27) routing Oklahoma Christian University, 8-0. The Jets closed out the regular season 12-3-3, setting a new school record for wins in a regular season wrapped up third place in the Heartland Conference with a record of 8-3-3.

Wichita, KS senior Grace Linton was the story of the first half as she recorded two of her three goals on the afternoon. Linton put the Jets on the board early in the 12th minute off her own rebound shot that bounced right back to her boots finding the empty net. Linton tacked on her second goal twenty-two minutes later in the 35th minute putting the Jets up 2-0. Less than four minutes later senior Dayna Johnson headed home her third goal of the year on Linton's cross sent into the box, giving the Jets a commanding 3-0 lead. Quincy Plank sent a long ball finding Colleen Hampton who juked around the Eagles keeper netted home her ninth goal of the year giving the Jets a 4-0 halftime lead.

Linton got things started back up in the second half for the Jets, recording her first hat trick of the season just four minutes into the second half scoring her conference and team leading 15th goal, putting the Jets up 5-0. Johnson rocketed a cross finding the newly checked in Kennedy Weaver netting her fourth goal of the year just thirty seconds after checking into the contest, making it 6-0 Jets.

In the 58th minute, senior Lexi Clark scored her first goal of the season on an assist from Baylee Vaughn in the middle of the box beating the keeper left post and the 7-0 Jets lead.

Vanessa Ortiz put the icing on the cake in the match as she connected on her ninth goal of the season in the 89th minute.

Senior goalkeeper Ashley Sweetnam made the start recording four saves on all four shots she faced, picking up her first win and shutout of the season.

The Jets will be the No. 3 seed in the Heartland Conference tournament in Austin, TX on the campus of St. Edward's. The Jets will matchup against Dallas Baptist University Thursday (Nov. 1) at 11:00 A.M.
