Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Jets Take Down Lubbock Christian in OT

WICHITA, KAN – For the third-straight match this season, 90 minutes of play were not enough as the Newman women's soccer team needed overtime Thursday night in a 1-0 victory over Lubbock Christian. With the win, Newman improves to 8-1-2 on the year and 4-1-2 in the Heartland.

The Jets and Chaparrals struggled to get any momentum early in the contest due to wet misty conditions. The Chaparrals led the offensive push in the first 45 minutes of play, leading the Jets in the shot column with four shots, while limiting the high explosive offense of the Jets to just three shots. Neither team was able to find the back of the net, leaving the score knotted up at 0-0 after a half of play.

Much like the first half finding the back of the net was hard for both clubs as the defensive lines would not break keeping the game deadlocked at 0-0. The Jets got their first big chance in the sixty-ninth minute as Colleen Howland misfired a one-on-one opportunity against the keeper wide left. LCU like the first half recorded more shots with six, as the Jets only fired away four shots in the second half.

In the 95th minute of extra time a Chaparrals defender tried to end the match with a long shot straight on net sailed high just above the crossbar resulting in a Jets goal kick. After the LCU missed opportunity the Jets' offense forty seconds later put the pressure on the Chaparrals defense on Grace Linton's shot sailed wide. Vanessa Ortiz gave the Jets another golden opportunity as her free kick from 18 yards out was saved by LCU's keeper. The Jets' got a third opportunity in the final two minutes of the first overtime when Ortiz found Linton for a give and go inside the box leading to the game winning goal when Ortiz's shot beat the keeper on the far right post for her seventh goal of the year giving the Jets the 1-0 victory.

-          The Jets managed just four shots on goal for the game

-          The Jets ended their two game scoreless streak

-          Jackie Lari recorded her fourth straight shutout and seventh on the year.

-          The Jets defended their home turf after falling to LCU earlier in the season.

The Jets will head on the road for a three game road trip beginning on Saturday (Oct. 6) against Rogers State University. Kickoff is schedule for 12pm from Soldier Field in Claremore, OK.
