LAS VEGAS – The Newman men's and women's bowling team hit the lanes in Fabulous Las, Vegas this past Mon. and Tues. (Dec. 17 and 18) in the Glenn Carlson Invitational held by Fresno State.
After leading the tournament by a total 71 pins over cross town school Wichita State, the Lady Jets drew the third seed heading into the eight seeded bracket. Falling behind 0-2 after the first two games to the sixth seed Calumet, the Jets quickly bounced back with a game three 214-176 victory, forcing a fourth frame. In the fourth frame, the Jets forced all the pressure onto Calumet with a 213-167 blowout win forcing a winner take all fifth frame. In the decisive fifth frame the Jets were upset as their rally came up short falling by three pins, 170-167 to Calumet.
The Lady Jets finished the tournament with three individuals landing in the top 15 for the tournament. Senior, Ashton Anderson led the way for the Jets, bowling an average score of 213 while finishing fourth overall. The Topeka, Kan. native landed on the all-tournament team for the third time this season. Sophomore, Leanne Vastbinder finished 11th with an average score of 203, while Kristen Machacek concluded her tournament in 15th place, bowling an average score of 196.
On the men's side of things, the Jets went into the bracket as the ninth seed out of a total of sixteen teams. The Jets squared off against San Jose in the first round of bracket play. The Jets cruised in the first round with a 3-1 series win (233-177, 202-241, 243-181 and 246-206). The Jets matched up with top seeded Webber International University. The Jets started the match out strong with an impressive 257-243 victory going ahead in the match 1-0. The top seeded Warriors bounced back winning three straight frames (257-243, 179-236, 190-255 and 190-256) ending the Jets run.
Jake Provenzano finished 25th overall leading the Jets squad with an average 216.\

The Jets will conclude their Las Vegas trip in the Collegiate Shoot-Out, Wednesday and Thursday (Dec. 19 and 20) at the Gold Coast Bowling Center.
