LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The Newman University Men's Bowling team turned in a strong two-day performance at the Glenn Carlson Invitational, held December 18–19, 2025, at South Point Bowling Plaza in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Jets would then post another impressive performance at the Collegiate Shootout, held December 20–21 at South Point Bowling Plaza in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Glenn Carlson Invitational Recap:
The Jets opened the tournament in 15th place out of 60 teams following the first day of qualifying. On day two, Newman made a significant move up the standings, averaging 223.6 over the final three games of qualifying to climb eight spots and finish 7th, earning a spot in the top 16 and advancing to bracket play.
The bracket finals featured a head-to-head, best-of-five baker format. In the Round of 16, the Jets faced Muskingum and earned a 3–1 victory to advance. Newman then took on the No. 3 ranked team in the country, Wichita State, in the Round of 8. The Jets battled throughout the match but ultimately fell 3.5–1.5. With the loss, Newman concluded the tournament tied for 5th, capping a strong showing against one of the deepest fields of the season.
Individually, the Jets were led by senior
Zach Smullen, who finished 4th overall, averaging 229.1 across eight games of qualifying. Smullen's performance also earned him a spot on the All-Tournament Team.
Collegiate Shootout Recap:
The Jets opened the event with five traditional team games on day one and finished in 12th place out of 60 teams after a slow start. On day two, Newman returned to complete qualifying with 16 baker games. The Jets averaged 219.8 during the baker block, moving up five spots from 12th to 7th place and earning a berth in the Round of 8 Shootout. The shootout format placed the eight remaining teams into two four-team semifinal pods. Each team bowled four baker games, with the top two teams from each pod advancing based on total pinfall to the final four pod. The final four teams then bowled an additional four baker games, with final placement determined by total pinfall.
In the semifinal pod, the Jets came out firing, opening with a 236 before making program history by rolling the first 300 baker game in the program's 23-year history. The historic lineup, in order, featured

Brady Longenecker,
Daryus Alo,
Zach Smullen, and
Noah Akiona. Newman closed the block with games of 225 and 244, advancing to the final pod of four.
In the championship round, the Jets rolled games of 177, 192, 236, and 236, finishing the tournament in 2nd place, just behind the University of Saint Francis. No. 8 Mount Mercy University finished third, followed by No. 3 Wichita State University in fourth.
Individually, the Jets were led for the second consecutive event by senior
Zach Smullen, who averaged 218.6 for the tournament.
The runner-up finish capped a strong weekend for Newman, highlighted by a late surge up the standings and a historic milestone for the program.
