INDIANAPOLIS — Closing out the regular season with its toughest test, the Newman women's bowling team won the team title at the 49th Hoosier Classic with a stellar performance throughout the weekend at Western Bowl in Indianapolis.

The Jets, who are ranked third in the country, blew by Notre Dame College and St. Francis in the first two rounds of match play on Sunday before topping Grand View 3-1 in the final.

It's the second Hoosier title for the Newman women, who won the 2012 championship.

Newman was equally as impressive in the qualifying, sitting second after six team games Saturday and holding onto that second spot after 15 baker games Sunday to finish near the top out of the 66 teams in attendance, including 18 of the 20 teams in the latest coaches poll.

Kelly Machacek led the Jets in the individual standings, averaging 208.5 over six games to finish six in a field of over 400 bowlers. Leanne Vastbinder wasn't far behind, averaging 206.5 to come in 13th, while Haley Williams was 21st and Ashton Anderson 36th.

The Jet men, who are ranked No. 12, had a bit of a tougher weekend, rebounding over the final 10 baker games to finish 18th in a field that featured 78 teams and all of the top 20 teams in the country.

Nathan Brantley averaged 210.2 across six games to lead the Jets in 51st place in the individual standings, which featured over 500 bowlers.

The Jets kick off postseason play at the section qualifiers March 9-11.
