Machacek, Anderson Both Move To Round Of 16 At Nationals

LINCOLN, Neb. — Kristen Machacek and Ashton Anderson put together a successful first day for the Newman women's bowling team at nationals, as both have moved on to the round of 16 in the Intercollegiate Singles Championship.

The duo will both continue in the single-elimination bracket at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday back at Sun Valley Lanes. If they both win their first match, they will face each other in the 9 a.m. quarterfinals for a berth in Saturday's tape-delay televised semifinals.

Machacek took the easier route Tuesday, averaging 207.2 over six qualifying games to get seeded sixth in the bracket. That earned the sophomore a bye into Wednesday's round of 16. She started qualifying off with games of 224 and 225, then capped it with a 213.

Anderson took the more thrilling path, averaging 196.8 to get seeded 14th. She faced Shelly Goodwin of Lindenwood in the first round of match play, which sees the two bowlers throw three games, with the highest total pinfall advancing.

That first-round matchup went down to the final frame of the final game, as Anderson struck out the 10th frame to force Goodwin to match, and won by a slim 640-636 margin.

Anderson will face third-seeded Amanda Chrzanowski of Fairleigh Dickinson, while Machacek will take on 11 seed Kristin Quah of Vanderbilt.
