LINCOLN, Neb. — Both Ashton Anderson and Kristen Machacek ran into the same opponent on a hot streak Wednesday at the Intercollegiate Singles Championships, bringing an end to their individual tournaments at nationals.
Anderson, who won a thrilling match Tuesday in the first round, didn't have to sweat quite as much in the round of 16 early Wednesday morning at Sun Valley Lanes. The junior put up a three-game score of 682 — the second-highest total of the round by any competitor — to win comfortably over Farleigh Dickinson's Amanda Chrzanowski.
That pushed her into the quarterfinals, bowling for a berth in the televised national semifinals. There, she ran into Vanderbilt's Kristin Quah, and she was edged 637-597, finishing in a tie for fifth.
Machacek had her own troubles with Quah in the round of 16. Quah rolled a 659 — the fourth-highest score of the round — to edge the Newman sophomore 659-549. Machacek finished tied for ninth.
Anderson's finish and 2-1 record in match play is the best result by a Jet bowler since Georgia Drewes won the 2012 national championship.
The pair won't get much time off, as they'll join with the rest of the team for the Intercollegiate Team Championships, which begin with qualifying at 8:30 Thursday morning.
