Jets Run Into Tough Foes, Finish 9th At Nationals

LINCOLN, Neb. — Running into two of the hottest teams in the field and not able to find its own rhythm, the Newman women's bowling team fell in the fourth round and finished tied for ninth at the Intercollegiate Team Championship Friday morning at Sun Valley Lanes.

The team certainly showed why it was in the field of the final 16 teams in the country, rolling at least a 190 in 10 of its 19 games during match play. In the Jets' 1-2 record, their two defeats were against the two bracket finalists, as both Lindenwood and Sacred Heart rolled through the rest of their competition to meet up for the right to bowl in Saturday's TV final.

Newman started Friday needing to win six consecutive matches with barely a break to make it to Saturday. They began with a matchup against William Penn, splitting the first game, but then watching as the Statesmen moved out to a 2.5-0.5 lead in the best-of-seven match.

The Jets jumped ahead with three straight close games, and a rare second split game in the final game gave them the 4-3 win.

That set up the meeting with Sacred Heart, which entered the week unranked, but went on to take Lindenwood to the seventh game in the bracket final. SHU squeaked out a 207-203 win in the first game against Newman, and simply didn't make many mistakes on the way to a win in six.

The Jets placed in the top 12 in the country for the third year in a row, including a t-7th finish a year ago. It's the first time Newman has turned in three consecutive top-12 finishes since five straight from 2005 through 2009.
