WICHITA, KAN – The Newman Women's soccer team wasted zero time getting back into the win column on Thursday evening, winning 4-1 over Texas A&M International. The Jets improved to 6-1-0 on the year and 2-1-0 in the Heartland.
The high powered explosive offense put on an early first half clinic to begin the weekend road trip in Texas. Grace Linton the Wichita, KS senior recorded her fifth goal of the year putting the Jets on top in the 4th minute off a Vanessa Ortiz assist. The Dustdevils were not intimidated by the early goal, catching the Jets defense sleeping just 47 seconds later evening up the score.
Less than three minutes later Ortiz would find Linton for the second time in the first half giving the Jets the 2-1 lead in the 8th minute. The Jets' offense which had scored just a goal in the previous match had already scored two in less than nine minutes. The Jets continued to pressure the Dustdevils defense, setting up Colleen Howland's 6th goal of the season giving the Jets a 3-0 lead in the 10th minute on Ortiz's third assist in the contest.
Ortiz continued as the center point of attention for the Jets' offense putting one in the back of the net giving the Jets a commanding 4-1 lead in the 26th minute. The two teams settled down before heading into the locker rooms for halftime.
Newman would fall back into conservative mode in the second half despite outshooting TAMIU 6-2 in the second half. The Jets and Dustdevils both would go onto playing a scoreless second half.
- Ortiz finished the contest with a goal and three assists for a total of five points.
- Linton finished with two goals on four shots.
The Jets are back in action Saturday (Sept. 22) as they travel to San Antonio, TX to take on St. Mary's that will conclude their season long four game road trip. Kickoff is slated for 1pm from Sigma Beta Chi Field.
