Jets Offense Sets Tone in 4-0 Shutout Victory over St. Mary's

SAN ANTONIO, TEX – The Newman University women's soccer team continued their best start in school history on Saturday afternoon, defeating St. Mary's 4-0 at Signma Beta Chi Field. The Jets improved to 7-1-0 on the year and 3-1-0 in Heartland play, wrapping up their season long four game road trip with a 3-1 record.

Forward Grace Linton put the Jets in-front early in the ninth minute beating the Rattlers keeper, recording her seventh goal off Vanessa Ortiz's through ball. Newman would not look back as Grace Linton's through ball in the box found the foot of Dayna Johnson as she beat the keeper recording her first goal of the year putting the Jets up 2-0 in the eleventh minute.

The Jets would not get complacent after going up 2-0 early in the first half continuing to pressure the Rattlers defense. Grace Linton delivered her second goal in the contest, her team leading eighth goal from outside the box in the twenty-third minute off Dayna Johnson's fifth assist of the year. The Jets would take a 3-0 lead into the locker rooms.

The two teams made several adjustments in the second half as the scoring chances were limited. Freshman Sarra Gutknecht recorded her first collegiate goal in the seventy-ninth minute as she snuck it inside the near post off Lexi Clark's third assist of the year. The Jets defense packed it in the rest of the way to keep the Rattlers scoreless.

-          The Jets scored a total of eight goals on their weekend trip in Texas

-          Linton finished with two goals and an assist

-          Jackie Lari recorded her fourth shutout of the season

The Jets will return home for the first time in sixteen days as they host conference leading Dallas Baptist Thursday (Sept. 27th) at 5pm from Wilkins Field in Wichita.
