ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The No. 22 ranked Newman wrestling team rallied late Saturday afternoon (Jan. 26) defeating No. 15 ranked Maryville 24-18. The Jets improve to 3-5 on the season, ending a five match skid. After dropping the first match of the day, sophomore Tyler Lawley evened the match back up for the Jets sneaking out a 12-9 decision win over Taylor Jokerst. The Jets gained their first lead of the afternoon after a Kevin Kissane 11-7 decision win. After falling behind 9-6 in the match because of an open weight in the 149-pounds, No. 2 ranked Tyler Mies wasted no time giving the Jets the lead back recording his sixth fall of the season. Nate Panagakis sneaked out a 4-3 riding time decision putting the Jets back ahead 15-12. After Maryville secured a fall in the 184-pounds taking the lead back at 18-15 with just two matches to go, The Jets regained a three-point advantage after the Saints had an open weight in the 197-pounds. Junior, Thor Balavage would secure the Newman 24-18 dual victory picking up a second period sudden 4-2 decision victory.
