The MIAA Announces Academic Awards for Newcomers and Freshman

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The MIAA announced its final academic awards for the 2019-20 school year, the awards for newcomers and freshman. The awards include Academic Excellence, Scholar-Athlete and Academic Honor Roll for all first-year and transfer student-athletes. To be considered as a first-year or transfer student-athlete, the individual had not completed two semesters, excluding summer terms, at their current institution when they competed in their sport. 

There were over 110 student-athletes who earned the distinguished Academic Excellence award. The requirements for this award is having a grade point average used by the institution for purposes of NCAA academic certification of 4.00 or better at the certifying member institution. Newman saw six student-athletes earn a this award; Sam Loerke - Baseball, David Javorsky - Men's Basketball, Jason Okoro - Men's Basketball, Matt Schrock- Men's Golf, Selina Vidhammer - Women's Soccer and Rebecca Hageman - Volleyball. The Scholar Athlete award had nearly 20 student-athletes qualify. The requirements for the Scholar Athlete Award are having a grade point average used by the institution for purposes of NCAA academic certification of 3.50 at the certifying member institution. If competing in a championship sport of the MIAA, the student-athlete must earn All-MIAA honors. Marie Stephens of Newman's Women's Soccer team would be the Jets lone name on the list.The complete list of Scholar Athlete award earners is available here.

More than 1,000 student-athletes would earn the achievement of making it onto the Academic Honor Roll. To be recognized on the Academic Honor Roll, the student-athlete must have a grade point average used by the institution for purposes of NCAA academic certification of 3.00 at the certifying member institution. The Jets saw 46 student-athletes earn their way onto the Academic Honor Roll. For the complete list of award earners click here
