Kearney, Neb. – The Newman wrestling team was back in action Saturday morning as they took part in the Midwest Duals hosted by Nebraska Kearney. All three of the Jets matches came against teams from the RMAC Conference.
Newman took on Western Colorado in their first match of the day.
JJ Gilbert got the Jets started on the right side to start the day with a 12-1 major decision to give Newman the early 4-0 lead. After forfeiting 133 lbs,
Tyler Lawley put NU back on top of the Mountaineers with a first period fall. Newman would fall behind after the 149 lb bout, 12-10.
Baylor Smith and
Kameron Frame would win the next to bouts to put the Jets ahead 19-12.
Nate Panagakis and
Ivan Balavage would win their matches for Newman's final points of the match on their way to a 25-21 victory to begin the day.
In the second match of the day, Newman took on the CSU Pueblo Thunderwolves. After a loss in the first match and a forfeit in 133,
Tyler Lawley was able to get the Jets on the board with a third period fall. After losing the next two bouts, Newman would win four matches in a row to tie things up at 20 all heading into the heavyweight match where
Jacob Stoneberger would find himself on the wrong side of a 9-2 decision as the Jets fell to the Thunderwolves 23-20.
Newman's final match of the day came against the Chadron State Eagles, a match they would lose 30-12.
JJ Gilbert would start the Jets off with a fall, giving them an early 6-0 lead. Newman would lose or forfeit the next six matches before
Nate Panagakis would get the Jets back on the board with a 5-3 sudden victory.
Jacob Stoneberger would win a 12-6 decision in the final match of the day as Newman would fall to Chadron State 30-12.
The Jets will be back in action on Sunday, January 31 at 2:00 pm as they host the Fort Hays State Tigers in a MIAA Conference Matchup.
