HAYS, Kan. – The Newman Wrestling team traveled to take on the #19 Fort Hays State Tigers Sunday afternoon in their second MIAA Conference match of the season. After falling behind early, the Jets would battle back to take the lead before the Tigers would win the final two matches to take a 26-21 victory.
Newman would find themselves down 12-0 after a loss at 125 lbs and a forfeit at 133 lbs.
Tyler Lawley would get the Jets on the board with a second period tech fall 17-0. Newman would lose the 149 lbs matchup before
Baylor Smith (0:26) and
Kameron Frame (0:43) would both score first period falls to put the Jets on top, 17-16.
JD Johnson would find himself on the wrong side of a major decision before
Nate Panagakis would beat his opponent by major decision to take the one point lead back, 21-20. The Jets would then drop the final two bouts as
Ivan Balavage would lose a 9-2 decision and
Jacob Stoneberger would lose a sudden victory to #9 ranked AJ Cooper 8-6.
The Jets will be back in action on Friday, February 5
th at 6:00 pm as they host #2 Nebraska Kearney.
