HAYS, Kan. - Newman Wrestling had 5 attached wrestlers competing at the Bob Smith Open on Sunday in Hays. The event, hosted by MIAA opponent Fort Hays State, had nearly 400 wrestlers and was held across 6 mats.
The Jets saw just one placer in Junior
Ivan Balavage. Balavage returned to the mat last weekend wanting to fine tune his approach heading into the Midwest Classic. The Scranton, Pennsylvania native did just that opening his day with two wins and a place in the semifinal match at 197. Balavage fell to UNK's Jud Kuchera 9-1. After suffering another defeat, Balavage found himself vying for a 5th place finish in his final match of the day. The opponent, another Loper, Fabian Lopez, looked to get another win. The Junior,

Newman is now focused on preparing for the Midwest Classic held at the University of Indianapolis. The Jets will face the Greyhounds who beat Newman 32-10 in Edmond earlier this year among other teams. The Classic is Saturday, December 18 and Sunday, December 19. The tournament will be Newman's final before their Christmas break.
