Baseball Wins Series Opener Before Dropping Two, One-Run Ballgames to Washburn

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 TOPEKA, Kan. – The Newman Baseball team took to the road for their second to last series of the season. All three games would be one run ball games as the Jets would take game one 10-9, before dropping game two 7-6 and game three in eleven innings 7-6.

Despite being out hit by six in the contest, Newman would hold on to a late lead in game one. The Jets would use a five run second inning to take an early 6-1 advantage. Trailing 9-4 heading into the seventh, the Ichabods would put up three runs to make it a ball game again. Both teams would put up a run in the eighth inning, and Washburn would get one run in the ninth as the Jets would take the series opener 10-9.

Neither team would score in game two until the third inning when the Ichabods would push two runners across. The Jets, however, would answer right back with three runs in the top of the fourth inning to take the lead 3-2. Both teams would exchange two runs in the fourth as Newman would keep the one run advantage 5-4. Washburn would tie the contest in the bottom of the seventh inning. Newman would once again respond right away putting up a run in the top of the eighth and taking the lead back. Unfortunately for the Jets, the Ichabods would put up two runs in the bottom half of the inning to take the lead back. Newman would go three up, three down in the top of the ninth as Washburn would complete the comeback 7-6.

In game three, Newman would strike for two runs immediately with a two RBI single from Mitchell Austin. The Jets would tack on a run in the third and two in the fifth to take a 5-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth. The Ichabods would once again get right back into the contest by putting up a crooked number on the scoreboard. This time, it was four runs. With Newman leading 5-4, Washburn would take its first lead of the game in the bottom of the seventh when they would push two runs across to take the 6-5 advantage. Needing a run in the top half of the ninth inning, Hayden VanDePol would get hit by a pitch and advance all the way to third after back to back wild pitches. Austin would then single to second base and VanDePol would come across to tie things at 6-6. In the second extra frame, Washburn would get their leadoff runner on. He would then steal second and advance to third on a throwing error by the Jets catcher. The next batter would hit a single to left field to give the Ichabods the game three with 7-6 and the series victory.

The Jets will be back in action on Friday, May 7th at 6:00 pm as they travel to Hays, Kan. to take on Fort Hays State in their final series of the season.
