WICHITA – The Newman Jets Bowling teams opened up their 2022-23 season and were in action in their only home match of the 2022-23 campaign this weekend in the Mid-States Championships and put on a show.
The Men's team got off to an excellent start and were leading early and stayed in either 2nd or 3rd for the entire event.
Day 1 results would have them in 2nd with a total pinball of 6471 averaging 215.7.
The Jets were led by Senior Chasten Pojas who averaged 232.5 for the 6 games on the first day. Freshmen Noah Akiona and Zach Smullen would also have a great day averaging 219 and 229 for the day.

The Jets would be very consistent averaging 207.7 for the day putting them in 3rd after qualifying.
The 3rd place qualifying matched Newman with the 6th seed Mt. Mercy University. This match would be a one sided match with the Jets winning 3 straight games in the best of 5 format. NU averaged 253 which is a program record for any match bowled in the 20 year history.
Match two had the Jets matched with St. Ambrose. Just like the prior match, Newman won in convincing fashion, winning 3 games to 1 and advancing to the finals.
The Jets would then get cross town rival Wichita state University, which finished runner up at the ITC national championship last spring and had their core group back. These Shockers will be a great team all season. The Jets would lose this one 0-3 But did give the Shocks fits and didn't make it easy for them as all 3 games were close.
"The guys were very good this weekend and the 22-23 season is going to be very fun to be apart of" said Coach Murphy on his team's performance. The Men took 2nd place in their first tournament of the young season.
The Women's team got off to a very slow
start on Saturday and fought an uphill battle on day 1. They would end up in 8th place after day 1 averaging 177 on very challenging conditions.
Day 2 started out rough as well but the Jets kept fighting and made a run to finish in 6th place after qualifying. They would average 182 for the day.
NU would bowl Oklahoma Christian in the opening round and would go down 0-3 and finish tied 5th for the event. The Jets were led by Freshman Kassidy Miller who averaged 189 and sophomore Dakota Lennen averaging 188.
The Women's team returns to action on Friday, October 21st - Sunday, October 23rd for the Bearcat Classic in Fairview Heights, Illinois. The Men will take this weekend off and will take part in the Jayhawk Classic hosted by Kansas University on October 29th and October 30th.
